Exciting design trio sixixis have won the inaugural Laurent-Perrier Design Talent Award. The Hidden Art Cornwall designer-makers impressed a panel of judges including author and curator Max Fraser, director of the Geffrye Museum David Dewing, MD of Laurent-Perrier David Hesketh, Interiors Editor at Telegraph Magazine Annabel Freyberg, and Editor of House & Garden Sue Crewe.
As the first winners of this prestigious award, the entrants were judged on innovation, quality, visual impact and commercial viability. sixixis won thanks to their design ethos, innovative techniques and striking wood-based products. Selected from a wide collection of talented designer-makers, sixixis’ were awarded £1,000, a trip to Champagne and a case of champagne. Exhibiting at the Daily Telegraph House & Garden Fair with Hidden Art, sixixis will showcase their work (which can always be found at
www.hiddenartshop.com) to the public.
Currently, sixixis have their studio set up in Redruth. The members of the trio, Tom Raffield, Charlie Whinney and Chris Jarratt, studied 3D Design for Sustainability at University College Falmouth. Their aim to work with locally sourced wood gives an extra edge to their designs. Each member loves the life that Cornwall provides, and so have learnt to rely on local industry for their materials. Along with their innovative approaches to steam bending wood, the loyalty to their home gives them a character and resilience often missing in today’s design community.
Two other Hidden Art members, Charles Trevelyan and Jenny Wilkinson both came highly recommended by the auspicious panel of judges, scoring themselves a case of champagne each. The award kicked off a busy week for Hidden Art designer-makers, who displayed their wares at the Daily Telegraph House & Garden Fair from 29 June – 2 July 2006. In all, 17 Hidden Art members, all of whom have products on sale at the Hidden Art E-Shop, showed their designs to the masses.
