Hidden Art at 100% Design 2008
Hidden Art bring digital and cutting edge technologies to 100% Design 2008
Stand G90, Earl’s Court 2, London, 20-23 September 2007

Hidden Art designer-makers launching new products and prototypes at this year’s 100% design indicate a clear turn towards using new technologies to generate otherwise unachievable designs. A range of fabrics and leathers digitally etched and lasercut establish this presence, while the inclusion of the second ever Hidden Art Select range incorporates its own use of digital printing in Michelle Mason’s ‘Construct’ lampshades and glow in the dark prints in Peachy’s ‘Seascape’ lamp.

The range builds on the success of Hidden Art Select 2007, towards the ultimate aim of all involved in Hidden Art Select having the opportunity to participate in the merchandise license bid to supply for the 2012 London Olympics in 2009 as well as other opportunities. The Hidden Art Select participants include:
  • Ella Doran – The launch of the Hidden Art Select Kids initiative will link St. Paul’s Way Community School with designer-maker Ella Doran, allowing students to create surface designs Ella will incorporate onto Select trays.
  • Jake Phipps – Planar Mats, flat placemats, tablemats and coasters, printed to give the appearance of a 3-dimensional texture.
  • Margo Selby – Cushion covers inspired by the Liverpool Cathedral. Michelle Mason – Exclusive Construct Lampshades, made with digitally printed fabrics.
  • Peachy – Seascape bedside lamp and wall chart for children, featuring a glow in the dark which reveals the secrets of the deep.
  • Sharon Bishop (Hidden Art Cornwall) – Under The Surface series of 3 hand drawn designs, transferred onto ceramic plates.

Without Hidden Art, a not-for-profit organisation supporting UK designer-makers, this inventive and idiosyncratic upcoming British-based collection featuring Hidden Art Select, Hidden Art London and Hidden Art Cornwall members would not get the lucrative opportunity to launch their work (and careers) during the London Design Festival at 100% Design.

The Hidden Art London participants are:
  • Gina Pierce – Digitally etched fabrics and leathers in three different designs; Stairway, Layers and History Maps. Utilising the latest in digital technology and inspired by architecture and location.
  • LM Design – Ollo Eatingware and Ollo Eatingware Picnic ranges. A functional and useful modern eating system, for 100% Design expanded into picnic range, featuring lid and cup.
  • Selina Rose – Textiles created utilising cutting edge technology to create intricate patterns, allowing the potential to produce bespoke textiles. Bloom, Faceted and Flutterby designs made using water cut felt panel and plotter cut paper panels.
  • Slottables – Easy lightweight designs which allow for flat packing, while featuring levered and sprung elements to ensure stability. Soma Chair and Slot Coffee Table feature High Pressure laminate birch ply, with the table employing a 10mm glass top.
  • SOLiD SOUL – brothers Kieron and Brendan McSherry specialise in the innovative design of sculptural furniture. Their work Concrete Seat, Arched Concrete Bench and Telstar Shelving Unit all incorporate the aesthetic functions of fine art into sturdy and reliable furniture. The Arched Concrete Bench is made using recycled aggregate.
  • Tina Vlassopulos – Tina’s work echoes the current trend for pure, pristine ceramic work. Her Vases, Spiral Dish and Fin Bowl all contain a playful form brought into the kitchen and homeware range.

Two Hidden Art Cornwall members will also get the opportunity to exhibit on the Hidden Art stand:
  • Higher Market Studio – Higher Market Studio specialise in reinvigorating dated and unwanted but well made furniture. The piece on display at 100% Design will highlight this approach, indicating the usefulness of this bespoke process.
  • Melanie Guy – Sculptural panels of pewter on board. Surge, Deviant and Storm 4 all utilise biofoam and low melting pewter metal.
