Hidden Art Schools Project Teaches its first Teacher & Celebrates its 10th Anniversary

Hidden Art is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of its Schools Project with an exhibition at the Prince’s Foundation. The show, “Then, Now & Future”, combines 2005’s exciting new schools project of 3D work by Hidden Art designer-makers, local teachers and pupils, alongside winning work from previous years.

This year, the Hidden Art Schools Project, in collaboration with Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Islington EBPs, has evolved into a scheme of teacher placements with Hidden Art designer-makers.

Brian Hughes, Art Co-ordinator from Lathom Junior School, Newham, was the first participant in the new scheme. He spent a day with ceramicist Loli Cardenoso at her studio, Cockpit Arts, which led onto a project back in the classroom.  Brian taught pupils to design and make their own 3D pots.

Brian wanted to learn techniques to create Greek-style pots. He spent an informative and enjoyable day learning pottery skills of throwing, coiling, slip-casting and decorative techniques. Brian has since taught the techniques to three other teachers in his school so many more pupils will benefit.

Brian said of his experience: “The excellent knowledge and skills taught by Loli are extremely helpful in my specific topic. I gained so much from the placement and the children are enjoying pottery immensely now that I have a higher level of skills.”

Where are these talented children now?

Hidden Art is looking for any children and adults involved in the Schools Project over the past ten years, to catch up with them and invite them to join in celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the Schools Project.

In the past decade 7,000 local children have created colourful posters of local buildings for the Hidden Art Schools Project to brighten up Arriva Buses and Docklands Light Railway trains.  The project has encouraged them to explore their artistic and design skills whilst learning about their local cultural heritage.  The children’s posters have been exhibited at the Prince’s Foundation in Shoreditch, and received prizes from experts.  A selection of previous winners can be seen at www.hiddenart.com/previouswinners.

In 2005, the Schools Project evolved into an exciting new teacher placement scheme. Teachers spend time with a Hidden Art designer-maker leading on to an inspiring schools project back in the classroom where children will design and make their own 3-D work. A selection of the children’s work will be shown in the Then, Now and Future Exhibition at the Prince’s Foundation.

Are you one of the thousands of children from Hackney who took part in the Hidden Art Schools Project over the last ten years? Were you involved in any of the projects or were you even a prizewinner? Whatever you are doing now we would love to hear from you.  Please get in touch and join in the 10th anniversary celebrations.
