Europe’s largest open studios event, Hidden Art, is once again taking place across East London over the weekends of 22-23 November and 29-30 November (Saturdays 10am – 6pm and Sundays 12pm – 6pm).

 

This year Hidden Art is celebrating the tenth anniversary of what has become a winter tradition for thousands of visitors wanting to buy or commission work direct from designer makers.  From its origins in 1994 promoting the work of 43 Hackney-based designer-makers the event has grown each year and now showcases work from over 160 local designer-makers in 51 venues.  Last year studios and venues received over 30,000 visits from discerning Christmas shoppers.

 

For the third year running visitors will also have the chance to see a range of work from over 60 designers at the Hidden Art Design Fair at the Art and Ecology Pavilions, Mile End Park on Saturday 22 November 10am-6pm and Sunday 23 November 12am-6pm. The fair will also signpost visitors to all the studios in the area taking part in the Hidden Art open studios event, and there are narrow boat trips running along the Regents Canal (between Mile End Park and Broadway Market).

 

Each year visitors can buy or commission direct from designers’ studios, workshops or exhibition venues and there is a wide range of products on display including textiles, jewellery, lighting, furniture, ceramics glass and accessories). There is also the opportunity to talent spot from the many emerging designers who are taking part in Hidden Art open studios for the first time.

Some of the designers showcasing their work in 2003 include; some household names for example Ella Doran’s range of interior products with their trademark photographic imagery produced onto coasters and trays, Kate Malone’s ceramics inspired by land and sea, the pioneering Dominic Crinson who has put digital patterns on to a wide range of interior products from carpets to Formica. New designers to feature for the first time include Tine Bladbjerg’s simple and sculpted silver and gold jewellery, furniture which seeks to reflect our changing lifestyle from Thelermont & Hupton. Fashion and accessories from Ayumi Suzuki, hand felted merino wool hats from Kirstin James, contemporary lighting from Helen Rawlinson and Jenny Duff and Anti-quaint’s contemporary lighting and furniture.

 

All the designer-makers taking part in Hidden Art are featured in the FREE ‘Hidden Art map’ available now and on the Hidden Art website www.hiddenart.com along with valuable visitor information including selected walks across the Hidden Art area.
