Elegent and Functional Design

100% Design 2008

Kristian Stringer joined Hidden Art during 100% Design 2008, held on 18-21 September at Earl’s Court. The subsequent economic downturn continues to effect the design world, but Kristian’s Slottables concepts (using interlockable parts) could mark a new consciousness, with a focus on design complimenting function, rather than simply performing function.

“I wanted a range of furniture to help create an adaptable space, so it had to assemble easily and then, when the space was needed for something else, dismantle easily too,” says Kristian.

The Slottables range started through a vision to create something which was, in essence, simple. As Kristian says, “I wanted it to be as elemental as it could possibly be and still perform the function of a table.” The resulting designs were intrinsically elegant.

“I like the idea of the furniture working with the job that it has to do rather than just performing the function. It is a more holistic way of problem solving, the joining process becomes central to the whole process and overall aesthetic,” says Kristian.

Setting Sights on Milan

“During the show the full depth of the financial situation had not been reached but soon afterwards people were in no mood to spend money,” says Kristian. Despite the sudden global economic collapse, Kristian felt his decision to exhibit was justified. “I wanted a focus point and timetable for my work. When working alone, too often your own opinion is the only one to listen to. Direct feedback is vital to inform you of how you could do things better next time. “

“Showing with Hidden Art was great. All of the day-to-day things were dealt with which took away a lot of pressure. Although I still found it quite a stressful event, especially as this was the first time that I had done anything like this. In fact, it was such a good experience that I am showing on the Hidden Art stand in Milan this year with new products.”
