Magnus Long debuted his prototype Standing Hanger, a novel twist on clothes storage. The hanger is part of his "New Modern Design" concept, exploring modern functionalism in the context of how we live now.
What is important in the design process?
I start by looking at the day-to-day frustrations - small thing, for example, why is a wardrobe dark? I take a systematic approach, let ideas ferment and find a creative solution.
Why a hanger?
I analysed how people use clothes, with methods such as the "gravity scheme", ie, the higher up off the floor the cleaner the clothes! Nobody comes home and puts clothes in their wardrobe or puts the laundry away immediately. Standing Hanger is about moving clothes out of the washing machine and reducing the number of processes involved with managing clothes.
What stirs you?
I love solving problems. I sit around inventing things and admiring inventions.
And your next step?
I want to revolutionise shoe storage.
What do you like?
Basic, down-to-earth that make you smile. People always do funny things, and are great to watch.
