Junior Phipps - Conscious Forms

Junior Phipps launches his company Conscious Forms in Milan with Hidden Art in 2005, with two concrete lighting products - Lite³ and In-Out.

Why concrete?
working with concrete sprang from a desire to get to know the material. Concrete lends itself to any form. It is an incredibly versatile creative medium, it's your mould that determines the result. Concrete can take on forms that wood just could not, with no joins, no links - it is a question of understanding the moulding process. I want to bring sophistication to concrete. If concrete has a bad image, it is the designers at fault.

Did you grow up around design?
My dad was a mechanic so he was always fixing things and I was always around handiwork, learning to understand the process, tools and equipment. I had a creative flair from a young age.

What fascinates you?
I love illusion, creating different perceptions using multi-faceted textures and repitition.

And your next step?
I am interested in creating more sculptural-type pieces for gardens.

What is your pipe dream?
To build and live in a perfectly energy-efficient, self-sufficient house in the Caribbean.
