What are your expectations for the exhibition at Salone Satellite? After being in 100% Design I realised that what I really want to concentrate on is being a designer; designing prototypes and showing them to manufacturers, instead of being a designer-maker. So I will concentrate on design rather than producing a few pieces of my Silla & Mesa table and trying to sell it, because that's not really what I want to do. I just want to show it and get it manufactured, along with a couple of other pieces, and design a range of products.
The most important thing will be to get more contacts. It's the show where the most people I am aiming towards will be. Whoever is in the media focussing on what I do will be there. So if I don't get contacts out of it, it will be a waste. As soon as Milan finishes I have to get in contact with the people that I met there. If I don't send information straight away, a big gap develops.
How will you prepare for Salone Satellite? What I learnt from 100% Design is that before an exhibition it is good to get some contact with the press, and try to send images their way. That lets them see what is going on beforehand, because at the show, you are always small compared to the surroundings. If you get a bit of interest here in Britain, it will be good once we get into Milan.
Once I have established more manufacturer contacts I will start to approach them with any other ideas I come up with as well. For now though I need to focus on the exhibition, because getting new ideas into production and generating contacts go hand in hand.
What products will you be launching at Salone Satellite? It is a continuation of the Silla & Mesa line, in the same style. This time it is in the form of a table, with two functions in one; which is always my approach. It is a coffee table with a magazine rack built in. It follows a similar style; the continuous line, plain colours with one bright colour, made of wood and polyester. There is also the Fibre 'C' Project, which comes from a contact I got out of 100% Design.
They approached me and said they are focussing on exterior products. Fibre 'C' works with cement, but they carve surfaces out of it. So it will be the same approach as my Silla & Mesa line, one sheet that is then carved. Because it is concrete it is more durable and can be used outside. I am trying to see who else is at the fairs as well at the moment, to direct my own designs. For the bright colour component in Silla & Mesa for example, I can tailor it to fit the trends. Also for promotional material I can see how people are presenting their work as well.
How important is Hidden Art for you? Since I joined Hidden Art I have been shown what I am capable of doing in order to pursue my goals. Before joining Hidden Art I didn't know how to approach any opportunities, how to get to 100% or Milan.
It is a very, very important part of my development. Once I have established more manufacturer contacts I will start to approach them with any other ideas I come up with as well. For now though I need to focus on the exhibition, because getting new ideas into production and generating contacts go hand in hand.
