Selina Rose’s Bloom and Botanica textiles bring a natural vibrant energy to interiors. The versatile felt creations will be shown on the Hidden Art stand at 100% Design this year, a one-time fantasy for the designer-maker.
“I’d always dreamt of exhibiting at 100% Design since I visited for the first time back in 2000, when I was about 16,” says Selina. “My parents brought me up from Cornwall when I had just started studying for my foundation at Art College and it opened my eyes to the possibilities of design.” The story of Selina’s arrival on the 100% Design scene is one which has become quite common in the design world, one which spreads the story of Hidden Art supporting upcoming designer-makers.
“Hidden Art have helped me with tailored support and subsidized stand costs which has allowed me to exhibit at 100% Design this year,” she says. “I have had one-to-ones with Hidden Art staff and associates as well as PR generated by Hidden Art’s PR agency, PR Girl. I am increasingly working with interior designers and private clients on bespoke and site specific pieces to commission. 100% Design is the UK’s leading contemporary design event for the contract market so it is the perfect place for me to make new contacts in this field and gain exposure for my products.”
Selina will be on stand thanks to the strength of her felt work, selected by the 100% Design team. Her approach is to use advanced level water cutting on felt panels, producing intricate patterns which take their cues from the natural world. Utilising felt means that the designs are versatile; the panels are put to use as cut felt rugs, table runners and bespoke panels. Alongside using progressive techniques, Selina’s methods also have an eco-friendly edge. “The panels are made from 100% wool felt,” says Selina. “They are coloured in my distinctive colour palette using environmentally friendly dyes. The felt is also both sustainable and biodegradable.”
Selina is a great example of a designer-maker making the most of their membership to Hidden Art, and her environmental approach means we are proud to be representing her and her work. “In 2007 I returned home to Cornwall to exhibit at the Hidden Art Cornwall Design fair and this year I used my Hidden Art training voucher towards the cost of my exhibition stand at Pulse. I attend the Hidden Art Forums and networking sessions which are great ways to get inspired. They make you get out of the studio and talk to other designers. I also sell online through the Hidden Art Shop.”
