MODULE 3 - Product Development

Product Development will show you how to develop a product from concept to production. Key elements to be examined include product development strategy, licensing, manufacturing processes, health and safety, use of materials and distribution. The Product Development Module will give you an overview of important aspects to develop your product, whether in small batches or for larger production runs.

Introduction to Product Development
One-day course
Jodie Eastwood, Linden Davies and Edward Alves of Metropolitan Works, at Metropolitan Works.

The morning of this introduction will introduce the key aspects of developing new products for market, how to set out the process and the business case for a managed workflow. The afternoon session will demonstrate how new technology is enabling faster and more customized product development and prototyping.

Two-day Seminar
Peter Cracknell, Marion Ingle and Institute of Materials, at Institute of Materials.

The two-day seminar assumes no prior knowledge and is suitable for those new to the subject, while also benefiting those who wish to extend their existing knowledge of plastic product design and project management skills. You can attend any or all of the half day sessions.

The morning of day one will cover Health and Safety and product legal requirement, and the afternoon session will focus on polymer factors influencing product design and specification and the influence of shaping methods upon design. Day two will feature polymer product design theory, project management and prototyping techniques in the morning, with finishing and assembly techniques and a practical design and critical appraisal session in the afternoon.

Product Development 1-2-1’s
Eligibility: FREE to Level 2 members (£60 inc VAT for three sessions for Level 1 and UK members).

The 1-2-1 sessions are designed to run in conjunction with the two-day short course. Peter will expand on knowledge gained from the two-day course, developing a project with you from specification through project management stages, design inception and on to a commercial level suitable for quotation purposes.

To participate, you will need to provide an estimate of production costs, material selection and product specification containing as much detail as possible. This will be updated as you learn and develop your concept/ product.

The three sessions run over a 6 month period to enable you to work on the development of your product and get advice at different stages. You must attend all three sessions, providing maximum support during the product development cycle. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
