Overview

Africa, although a huge region, has only a fraction of the art and design opportunities that can be enjoyed in the UK. There are various rural, craft movements across Africa however the real increase in activity has been in the design world of South Africa.

Two major projects have kick-started South Africa’s previously quiet scene onto the global design network. The likes of the Campana brothers and ICON magazine visited Cape Town’s Design Indaba this year, following a long list of designers.

The second of the big events is Decorex, held in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg. These events have attracted not only national designers and talent, but also international manufacturers such as Vitra with a new Kartel store opening in Cape Town.

More recently, Africa 05, the biggest celebration of African culture in Britain, brought us the Mixed Belongings exhibition at the Crafts Council. This has since sparked a wider interest in the style and talent of African designer-makers at retailers such as the Conran Shop
