A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Shirley-Ann produces a range of hand made woven and knitted contemporary artefacts. She combines unexpected textures and colours using high quality natural yarns such as filament silk, fine high twist crêpe yarns and cashmere which have been sourced in the UK. Her work reflects influences and inspiration from the natural world and focuses on the tactile quality of cloth. Each piece is constructed on a floor loom or domestic knitting machine. Finishing or embellishing processes include: felting, shrinking (yarn properties or chemicals), hand dyeing, embroidering and crochet. Shirley-Ann’s creative philosophy is to maintain consistent originality and innovation in exploring traditional weave or knit constructions in contemporary ways that form textural surfaces with a visual, sensual and ethereal aesthetic.
