Textile Artist, Deepa Panchamia creates abstract sculptures and site-specific installations for interiors. Her philosophy is to challenge conventional perspectives of Textiles and her interests lie in the intertwining concepts of scale and space, structure and surface. Working predominately with strong transparent fabrics and occasionally leather, she creates sculptural fabrics that can be moulded and manipulated, to produce architectural textile formations (mountainous structures, elongated tunnels and suspend forms). The use of transparent material creates an interaction between the exterior and interior textural surfaces, adding levels of depth and volume to the structure. Working from her London-based studio, she undertakes projects, exhibitions and commissions for interior spaces in the UK and internationally. She solely creates one-off handmade pieces and recently created large-scale Wall Sculptures for a beachhouse in the Caribbean Island, Mustique. She has received Arts Council awards for previous projects and was awarded the 2008 Premio Valcellina Award for Textiles & Fibre Art in Italy. Deepa Panchamia is a Visiting Lecturer and has been invited to participate in International Artist Residencies where she continues to push the boundaries of constructed textiles.
