Functional art objects – sculptural lamps, fused glass tables, cast metal bowls and also pure sculpture. David Raine started out as a poet and a sculptor before travelling the world as a photographer for Associated Press and then working for several years in the film industry as a producer and a designer. A sense of poetry, of objects as metaphors always lies at the root of his work. Using materials that combine different qualities of permanence and fragility, he is interested in objects that both function as a piece of furniture and also have their own story to tell. For instance his cast metal bowls have inserts of torn silk and fused glass in a manner that is both decorative and also suggesting an inherent paradox in the contrast of materials; soft torn delicacy, richly coloured brittleness and the hardness of metal which still has a memory of its molten form. Both masculine and feminine qualities are strongly present in his designs. Inspiration comes from both the wild Cornish coastline with its natural organic forms and a love of urban city life.
