From her gallery and studio in the historic Cornish fishing village of Porthleven, Julia Mills has gained a reputation as one of the leading glass artists in the UK.
Using the very highest quality glass sourced from around the world, Julia takes inspiration from her local environment and the unique light that is renowned for bathing the Cornish coastline. She then achieves a dynamic and unique presentation of coloured glass within her contemporary artworks. Extra detail and interest is achieved by the use of acid-etching and sand blasting, both techniques absorb and reflect natural light, keeping the work bright and colourful.
Mounted in either Copper-Foil for the decorative artworks or Lead for the larger commissions, Julia's sensitive and sympathetic use of colour compliments and contrasts against the metalwork depending on the light source. the reflections and shadows achieved by light travelling through the artworks then appear to wash over any environment, transforming mundane rooms into places of magical light and mysterious reflections.
Julia's work ranges from small hangings, to larger wooden framed pieces, to full scale architectural presentations. Some of the designs are illustrative in nature taking their influence from the seashore, wildlife and coastal architecture. Other designs are of an abstract nature relying purely on the quality of the glass, carefully nurtured shapes, use of colour and of course natural light.
As well as being purchased locally, Julia's artwork has been flown all around the world and commissions have ranged from doors and windows in houses and apartments, to abstract panels in some renowned hotels and restaurants. Julia has a broad range of experience of working directly on commissions with clients, architects and interior designers.
