Fly-Pitcher

Fly-Pitcher is an innovative furniture design company that was launched in Milan 2002. Piers Mansfield, creative director, says “Fly-Pitcher was set up to produce limited editions, one-offs and small batches of lighting and furniture, by commission and on our own initiative".

The company’s interest is in applying new materials and techniques to the manufacturing process as well as using existing techniques in innovative ways. Fly-Pitcher also provides a consultancy service, advising in the manufacturing process and getting involved with everything from research to prototype development and production.

‘Mona-kok’ - Monocoque is a French word meaning single shell. ’Mona’ is an experimental design for a stool realised using 3D CAD software then created entirely by machines using rapid prototyping.

‘Vector Chaise’

… marked the launch of fly-pitcher, in Milan in 2002, seen here re-presented in a woven Kevlar mesh. Essentially a single sheet of folded material is formed and set into a strangely comfortable angular recliner. Inspiration came from exploiting the structural properties of Origami to manipulate flat sheets into complex geometries. It was originally worked up in CAD, not unlike the early computer game graphic of the 1980’s where it derives its name.
