Combining fabric with mixed media material, creating a variety of ‘ensembles’ - collated and pieced together fragments of material- cutting, pinning, stapling, stitching the work together- producing pieces constructed from abandoned and redundant materials. Sheet music, graph paper, maps, and anatomical illustrations become a surface to play and invent with. In one piece, coloured thread is machine stitched along roads and rivers on a printed paper map, which floats off the surface to become entangled and entwined, no longer tracing the path. In another piece, delicate organic structures appear through printed textual layers of paper, disrupting the words, evolving through process. The delicacy of the stitching contradicts with some of the abrupt language of the text.
The making process is always at the heart of the work, with a sense of the handmade evident in each piece, applying a level of uniqueness to each paper and fabric artefact. Concept pieces can be transformed into product ranges including: Bookworks - limited edition bookworks and text pieces Wearable works - individually handmade products combining fabric and paper Note: Buyers are encouraged to select pieces of text, or maps more personal to them as a backdrop for embroidered work.
