Marcio Mattos works in red and white stoneware and paper clay, reduction fired in a gas kiln. Vessel-orientated individual pieces are entirely hand-built. Being a musician as well as a potter, Marcio Mattos brings into his ceramic work the same creative process which lies behind improvisation in music: the spontaneity and intuitive 'freeness' of the moment of creation. He likes to leave impressed in the clay the immediacy of this process, both in texture and in form. The vessel, as an object, which gives form to an empty space, serves as the starting point for ideas. Nature, especially geological marks, and ancient man-made artefacts transformed by the passing of time are constant sources of inspiration.
