Combining transparent fabrics and leathers with inventive pleating techniques, Textile Artist Deepa Panchamia creates structural installations, sculptures and avant-garde wearable art. The symbiotic relationship between transparency and solidity give her fabric enhanced structural properties allowing it to be moulded, manipulated and transformed - essentially moving textiles away from its traditional two-dimensional form. Her philosophy towards design is to challenge conventional perspectives of textiles. She allows the structures to evolve through a series of stages, making the fabric and form equally expressive. Exhibiting a strong linear wave motion the pieces are detailed yet controlled; energetic yet coherent. Panchamia’s work is solely about reaching this balance – to create intriguing structures that engage notions of aesthetics, rhythm and continuity. Deepa Panchamia exhibits in the UK and abroad - exhibitions include Transparent, Finland (2007); London Design Festival (2006) and The Fashion and Textile Museum, England (2005). She solely creates one-off handmade pieces and undertakes private commissions; has received wide media coverage including the BBC and Channel 4 and was awarded the Individuals Grant from the Arts Council England. Deepa Panchamia is a Visiting Lecturer and has been invited to participate in International Artist Residencies where she continues to push the boundaries of constructed textiles.
